Caring for curly hair can be a challenge, and changes in the weather can make it harder to maintain frizz-free curls. Whether you're dealing with humidity, dry heat, or chilly winter winds, each climate affects our curls differently. Adapting your routine to the climate will help maintain your curls' bounce, definition, and hydration.

Follow these tips to protect your curls as we move into the summer holiday season!

Humid Weather: Prevent Frizz & Add Shine

Humidity is often considered curly hair's worst enemy. The excess moisture in the air causes the cuticle layers to lift, leading to frizz and loss of curl definition. Here’s how to maintain your curls' shape and shine, even in the most humid environments:

1. Use anti-humidity styling products

Look for styling creams or gels specifically designed to shield your curls from excess moisture in the air. Ingredients like Polyquaternium form a protective barrier around your curls to lock in your style and prevent frizz. Many of our products, such as the Hydrating Creme and Enhancing Gel, feature this essential ingredient  to help combat humidity. Additionally, Flaxseed Oil is a great ingredient for fighting frizz, which is why it's a key part of our Mega Hold Gel.

2. Moisturise your curls, but don’t overdo it

In humid weather, it's essential to hydrate your curls. Use lightweight leave-in conditioners or curl creams to keep your curls hydrated without making them heavy or greasy. Our light Hydrating Creme is the perfect choice to maintain moisture without weighing your curls down.

3. Seal in moisture with oils

After styling and drying your hair, finish your routine by applying our Nourishing Hair Oil. This seals in moisture and creates a protective barrier to fight off frizz, while also keeping your curls defined.

4. Plop your curls for better definition

Plopping is a great technique where you wrap your curls in a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt to enhance definition and reduce frizz. In humid conditions, this helps keep your curls clumped together as they dry, reducing exposure to moisture in the air. Our Microfibre Towels and Towel Turbans are the perfect tools for achieving great results with this method. Check out our Plopping tutorial here.

5. Avoid touching your curls

The more you touch your curls, the more frizz will form. Let your curls dry completely before fluffing or scrunching them. This locks in definition while also keeping frizz at bay.

6. Protect your curls

If you’re in sunnier climates, it’s important to shield your hair from UV rays. We would never go out without sun cream, and it should be the same for our hair. Sun damage can cause dryness, brittleness and frizz, as well as loss of colour. Before going outside, spritz your hair with our Heat Protect Spray. Not only does it shield your hair against high heat, it even protects against UV rays, environmental damage, and pollution. It’s also rich in protein to strengthen and nourish your curls. This multi-purpose spray is a must in sunny weather!

Dry Climates: Keep Your Curls Hydrated

Dry climates can strip moisture from your curls, leaving your hair brittle, dry, and prone to breakage. Here’s how to keep your curls hydrated and healthy:

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Moisture is key when living in a dry climate. Deep condition your curls weekly with our Deep Hydration Mask to infuse your curls with moisture. Look for products containing humectants like Glycerin and Aloe Vera which attract and retain moisture. Our Hydrating Creme, Enhancing Gel, and Mega Hold Gel all contain Glycerin and Aloe Vera, so they’re perfect for styling your curls and keeping them moisturised.

2. Limit high heat styling

Excessive heat can exacerbate dryness and damage to your curls, so try to avoid blow-drying or straightening your curls frequently. When diffusing, try to diffuse on a low heat and always apply our Heat Protect Spray to shield your curls and keep them in the best condition! Plopping is great for dry climates too as it dries your hair without any heat and minimises frizz.

3. Use a humidifier indoors

A humidifier can make a big difference in dry climates. It adds moisture to the air, and prevents your curls from becoming excessively dry and brittle.

4. Protective styles

In a dry climate, wearing your hair in protective styles like braids, twists, or buns help reduce exposure to harsh, drying elements, while also locking in moisture.

Our Satin Lined Baseball Caps are the perfect accessory for keeping your curls hydrated and protected. The smooth satin fabric helps retain moisture, and prevents friction and damage. We have a great selection of colours and styles for you to choose from. Do you prefer to wear your hair up with a cap? Then our open back style is the one for you! We also have the classic baseball style if you prefer this.
