Damp vs Soaking?

When it comes to wavy, curly and coily hair, how you apply your products can make a huge difference. It’s always a good idea to experiment with different application techniques to find out what works best for you.

Here's an amazing video from Sophie Marie using Only Curls styling products that shows the difference... And we break it down even further below.

What is wet styling?

Wet styling is applying the products to soaking wet hair. The easiest way to do this is keeping your styling products (creme and gel) in the shower and apply immediately after rinsing out the conditioner. If you prefer to apply your products in front of a mirror, then have a misting bottle to rewet the hair as you are styling.

What are the benefits of wet styling?

- Reduced frizz

- More shine

- Thicker curl clumps (the hairs clump together better when wet)_

- More definition

What is damp styling?

Damp styling is applying the products to your hair once it’s partially dry. Usually after scrunch drying with a microfibre towel.

What are the benefits of damp styling?

- Finer curl clumps

- More volume

- More curl at the root (sometimes wet styling can stretch out the curls in more wavy textures)

What would we recommend?

This completely depends on your unique curls and how you prefer to wear your hair. If you want more volume you are likely to prefer damp styling, but if you are looking for less frizz and more definition then wet styling will be for you.

At Only Curls, we like a combination of both. Applying the Hydrating Curl Creme to soaking wet hair, scrunch drying with the curly towel and then scrunching the Enhancing Curl Gel or Mega Hold Gel into damp locks tends to be the winning method for most.
