Enhancing Curl Gel

One of the most common issues we come across is stringy curls that often result from a lack of moisture in the hair. Styling techniques can also affect this. What causes stringy curls and how can we avoid this when styling?

To avoid stringy curls, we need to create large curl clumps. What exactly are curl clumps? This simply means how your curls gather or clump together in thicker strands. Bigger curl clumps are essential for better definition with no stringiness.

Why do stringy curls happen and how can we avoid it?

There’s a few reasons for stringy curls, but it’s likely the hair needs more hydration. This doesn’t mean you need heavier products when styling. Lightweight styling creams, like our Hydrating Curl Creme, are fantastic for moisturising the hair, and then you can lock in all that lovely moisture with our Mega Hold Gel. This means your hair will be lusciously soft and defined, without being weighed down.

Squish-To-Condish

Curls need all the hydration they can get, and the “Squish-To-Condish” Method is key for hydrated, happy curls. After applying the Conditioner and combing it through, you simply squish the Conditioner and some water into your hair.  This will create a smooth, seaweed-like texture - the perfect base for styling curls. You can see more on this fabulous technique here.

You could also try the "Bowl Method" technique after applying your Conditioner. For very thirsty curls, this method should be your go-to for perfectly hydrated, defined, and frizz-free results.

Deep Condition Your Curls

Is your hair feeling especially dry? We all need a little extra TLC at times, so use our Deep Hydration Hair Mask to give your curls the love they deserve! This rich mask is filled with nourishing ingredients to strengthen the hair and it contains protein to reduce any damage that may be affecting your curls. To make the most of this gorgeous product, see how to deep condition your curls here.

Add More Water

Water is essential! Stringy curls can happen when applying your products on hair that is less wet or damp. Water clumps the curls together and so using less water results in thinner “stringy” curls.

Try applying your styling products when your hair is soaking wet and add more water throughout your styling routine if needed. This retains all the lovely moisture, and the extra water creates the most gorgeous curl clumps. Damp styling and wet styling create different results which you can see here.

Try Different Styling Techniques

Many of us love to rake or comb/brush our products through after applying them. This can break up the curl clumps, especially in looser curl types, which causes stringy curls. Try a different styling technique, like glazing and scrunching the products into the hair instead.

If you prefer to rake or brush-style your curls, then spray some water over your hair after applying the products. This will help the curls clump back together again.

Diffusing

Diffusing your hair, rather than air-drying, can also help the curls clump together and create bigger, bouncier curls. Gentle diffusing is essential as being too vigorous or using too high a heat can cause frizz and break up the curl clumps. Check out our diffusing tips here for the best frizz-free, defined curls.

When Was Your Last Haircut?

Stringy curls can also be a sign that it’s time for a trim. Curls thrive when the hair is in good condition, so it’s vital to regularly trim the dead ends for fabulous curls! Curls are beautifully unique and they need to be treated differently to straight hair.
